FAMILY MATTERS CAST
For those of you that had a fond memory of 90’s sitcoms (which we believe were the best), probably could still remember a skinny, annoying, suspender wearing, high pitched voice nerd named Steve Urkel. For those that have never heard of him, I’m just going to pretend you don’t exist. Steve Urkel! Who in the world has never heard of him?
Okay people, a little history lesson for those unfortunate souls that were just probably too young to enjoy the prime of Friday Night Family Series. The year was 1989 and a top notching TV series (Perfect Strangers) was about to bid farewell and have viewers welcome in a spin off and unexpectedly become America’s most beloved family shows.
Family Matters was an American sitcom about a middle-class African-American family living in Chicago, Illinois. Midway through the first season, the show introduced the Winslow's nerdy neighbor Steve Urkel (played by Jaleel White), who quickly became its breakout character and eventually a main character.
Jaleel White was only 12 years old when he originated his most sought after role as “Steve Urkel” in the TV show “Family Matters”. But if there’s one thing that most people don’t know about Jaleel White would be the struggle and experiences that he had at an early age. Although Jaleel White did happen to land his first role in the show “Charlie and Company” on CBS and squeezed himself into another big role on “The Jeffersons” also on CBS, Jaleel White did have his obstacles with the Cosby’s.
Auditioning for the role of Rudy Huxtable on the Cosby Show, originally supposed to be a boy’s role, Jaleel White who was turned down expresses until this very day how depressing it was for him when he was rejected the role.
It was only a few years later when Jaleel White had the opportunity to do a one time appearance on “Family Matters” as a Steve Urkel little knowing that it would be that same character that made the TV series an instant hit. Producers saw that his character worked and had him on the show permanently.
Giving much popularity to the show, Jaleel White also exclaimed that it wasn't an easy ride for him on Family Matters especially the fact that most of his cast members at some points would alienate him.
“Things were definitely strained in the early going. There’s no sense in hiding that. There was a division between myself and the rest of the cast, but over nine years and 215 episodes, obviously relationships get better. I still talk to certain cast members to this day.” Jaleel White says.
After nine years of playing Steve Urkel, with billions of fan base, a “Steve Urkel” doll line, and a breakfast cereal, and cameos in other popular TV series’, Jaleel White was the highest paid African American Child Star in history. In addition, Jaleel White also wrote several episodes of “Family Matters”, including one, at age 19 which was the highest rated for the series.
Steve Urkel was a household name in the 90’s with his popular phrase “Did I Do That?” and his constant pursuit to his opposite character on the show “Laura Winslow. He was most definitely an icon in 90’s Television, spearheading the Series as the longest African-American TV Show.
Present time, Jaleel White is still in the entertainment business and is doing quite well for himself. Producing different comedic shows and getting internet fame with his sites and hilarious web shows.
Although we saw the sudden end of Steve Urkel, we will definitely see the future with Jaleel White.
