GET THE LOOK (Spring 2011 Fashion Week Edition): Tracy Reese

Hey Glamazons! On Monday, I finally had the chance to meet the glamazing makeup artist Mally Roncal..and boy is she awesome! As the lead makeup artist for the Tracy Reese show, she was responsible for creating this gorge 1970's inspired beauty look for the models. Here's how it looked coming down the runway. Isn't it beautiful?!

All I could think about while watching her apply the makeup (while getting these great tips for you, of course) is that it would be the perfect look to wear while laying out on my rich boyfriend's yacht. I totally don't have a rich boyfriend (yet) but I've filed this beauty look away in my brain as one I need to emulate for the precise moment that this happens in life.
So, here's how you can get the look at home (using Mally's signature line of beauty products, of course):

    FACE
"The skin is sunkissed and glowing. It's like a little bit of that 70's healthy glow. Go ahead and highlight those cheekbones! We are embracing the warmth of the skin." - Mally
    -Foundation: Visible Skin
-Bronzer: Apply Bronze Genius all over, but keep the center of the face light. Keep it natural.
-Highlighter: Apply Finish Line Luminizer softly under the brow bone and work the cheek bone.
-Blush: Mally created this super top secret shade of blush specially for Tracy Reese's show! I'll share the deets on this one as soon as I find out more on it!

    EYES
"The eye is encompassed with a shimmering brown all around. The lashes are curled but the concentration of the mascara is as the base of the lash therefore leaving the tips of the lashes fluffy. The inner corners have a little bit of a champagne shade. The brows are a bit finer (like yours!) but defined." - Mally
-Apply Evercolor Shadow Stick in Bronze on the center of the lid up to the crease to add a bit of sparkle when you blink.
-Apply Evercolor Shadow Stick in Champagne on the inner corner of the eye.
-Apply Evercolor Starlight Waterproof Liner in Lucky Penny on the outer part of the top lid.
-For lashes, apply two coats of Mally's Volumizing Mascara concentrating on the base of the lash while keeping the lash tips feathery and light.
-To define brows, use the Brow Beauty Brow Pencil.

    LIPS
"For cheeks and lips, the story is that peach is the new pink." - Mally
    - Mally created a sharp line using a liner brush to apply the gloss, no lip liner. She also created another super secret lip shade especially for the Tracy Reese show that I also have to get the scoop on! She topped the lip color with a coat of clear gloss.

And there you have it! Although most of these products aren't available for purchase just yet, you can use existing products in the line (like these below) to get the look!:

And here's one last shot from the show of Mally and Tracy that makes me smile every time I see it! Don't you just love how happy they both look in it?!

Backstage Beauty: Alexander Wang Spring 2011

Now here's a fun ingredient that I've never seen used backstage during the five years that I've been covering backstage beauty during Fashion Week: clay!
Alright, so maybe it's not really that fun because all I could think about while watching the models get this stuff put into their hair is what would one use to get it back out?! Would it be just regular 'ole drugstore shampoo or something fancier? What if you had to use something weird like pure alcohol?! Did the models sign consent forms ahead of time to get this stuff put in? And what about the ones that had shows immediately afterwards?! Well, I guess all those thoughts are really besides the point. The more important point at hand right now is why the clay was even used in the first place. (Leave it to Alexander Wang to even think of such a thing. Apparently he was channeling the punk rock skater girls found in the East Village here in NYC. Thrilling.)
Of course, it wasn't like pure clay (or at least I don't think it was). According to hairstylist Guido Palau (for Redken), the stuff was "fuller's earth with white pigment." (So that's not officially clay, right?! Maybe this would be classified as a "clay-like mixture" then? Hmmm....)
Palau, who described the look as the "new-age traveler" pulled all of the models' hair back into messy knots and then created spikes. The white clay mix was used to block out any sort of natural looking hair color and painted onto the models' hair in streaks as well as onto the spikes of the hair. He finished the look with Redken Forceful 23 hairspray followed by a blast of heat from the blow dryer to "bake" in the clay. (Yes, he used the word bake. It took all I had not to start giggling.)

Over in makeup, Diane Kendel (for MAC Cosmetics) described the look as "very cool." So cool that all she used to create this look was moisturizer and brow bleach. (Or maybe the correct verbage would be bleached brows?) That's it. Weird, right? (That's what I thought anyways.) But, don't let me be the judge of this: what do you think? I mean, I obviously wouldn't wear a look like this ever in life (my skin shudders at the thought of having clay put into my perfectly dyed blonde hair) but what about you?

New York Fashion Week: Nicole Miller Spring 2011

    Okay, Glamazons, I'm excited.

Remember when I said Nicole Miller presents collection after collection of fabulous, but predictable, ruched dresses? Well, she surprised and thrilled me this season with a line devoid of her signature ruching. What showed instead were breathlessly beautiful garments which embodied the motif of ease and grace that will define the upcoming Spring season.

Silhouttes were fluid with airy yet fitted lines that were full of brevity. White was a strong trend (in several collections like BCBGMaxAzria and Port 1961 as well) but here, we see the hue in great separates that provide a tailored yet effortless fit on the body. Highlights were the sharp bone and beige trench coats and vests that brought structure to fluid sheer dresses and tops.

Miller experimented with sheer fabric in the most elegant way, creating sex appeal with an air of sophistication. This delights me as it shows that even though she's used new fabrics and experimented with a different aesthetic, she hasn't lost her penchant for creating sultry, womanly garments. This fact will surely delight her more trendy fans like Cassie, Keisha Whitaker and June Ambrose who filled the front row (pics below).

Prints were also a theme on the Nicole Miller runway with gorgeous blue and white watercolor and black and white painterly patterns showing up on languid, draped dresses.

The look is much more refined than previous seasons but garments, like the sheer top and skirt shown here on Rose Cordero, are packed with Miller's signature edge, youthfulness and femininity. I'm so impressed with this collection. Bravo!

    Love the sleek, colorblocked heels!

Here's Nicole Miller backstage with the models.

What do you think of the line?

And check out the fashionable front row:

Cassie and Keisha Whitaker, wife of Forest Whitaker and co-owner of Kissable Couture with Celebrity Makeup Artist, A.J. Crimson made for a gorgeous front row.

Miss Cassie chose a sexy little black dress for the festivities.

Love Keisha Whitaker but not my favorite fashion moment from her.

    Kisses,

    Coutura

New York Fashion Week: BCBGMaxAzria Spring 2011

BCBGMaxAzria is always one of the first shows during New York Fashion Week, and as such, it sets the tone.

With young, chic starlets who will no doubt be wearing the dresses soon in the front row (Kelly Rowland, Coco Rocha and Ashlee Simpson), designer Max Azria showed a cohesive, wearable collection of lightweight dresses made for easy summer days and nights.

The aesthetic was decidedly understated and minimalist with fluid silhouettes and breezy shapes reigning supreme. While the show seemed rooted in neutrals (nudes, beiges, etc.) and whites (The Classic LWD) in the beginning, toward the end of the runway punchy pinks and rich oranges made a bolder statement.

The longer dresses were just as clean and chic, with touches of lace or sheer skirts adding renewed interest. The beauty look was equally subtle: bare makeup and sleek ponytails that emphasize natural, effortless beauty.

Very elegant and simplistic, the dresses weren't without a touch of modernity that will please BCBGMaxAzria's more trendy fans like Kristin Cavallari, Kelly Rowland and Solange Knowles. Lace details, sheer flutter sleeves, soft ruffles, criss-cross color-blocking, wrap stiletto sandals and one-shoulder necklines were youthful, fashion-conscious touches that brought the collection its cool factor. And we can't forget those dangerously short hemlines which highlight the one fashion rule that never changes: legs are always in style.

Without a doubt, BCBGMaxAzria will again provide the Spring wardrobe stables for young, fashionable women across the globe. I've got my eye on this vibrant pink frock, which dress do you love the most?

    Kisses,

    Coutura

Glamazons Blog Guide: What to Wear to Fashion Week

It's that time of year again where impeccably-dressed editors and eclectic fashionistas make their way to the tents for their first glimpse at the new season's collections. Though this year marks the first run of New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, the rest of Fashion Week will remain positively normal. Attendees from celebrities to journalists will still come clad in designer duds, stepping in 5-inch heels with fabulous IT bags in tow. Yes, ladies and gentleman, the fashion week wardrobe is still intact.

Allow us to share the checkpoints of any successful Fashion Week ensemble with you: a designer dress, an It bag, a killer pair of heels, sunglasses, a wow beauty look and flawless hair. And ladies, take note. If there is anything you should take away from Ferocia and my Fashion Week escapades, it's that your goal at Fashion Week is to look the part above all else. Afterall, it's an industry based around appearance (hello!).

Follow this guideline and you will stand out among the Fashion Week crowd...in a good way, of course.

    DESIGNER DRESS

When you're attending several shows a day, who has time to painstakingly plan the perfect outfit? Not me. A dress is a simple yet fabulous option that is perfect for on-the-go editors like myself. The fabulous Fashion Week twist is to wear a dress by a designer that represents a signature look or print from the previous collection---i.e. when everyone sees you in it, they know it's [enter designer name here from the Fall season]. Celebrities pay homage to designer shows by wearing that artisan's frock at their collections, and you can too. Sample sales and my fave, Rent the Runway, provide the perfect opportunity to wear designer duds for less. Here are some standouts from the season that look as good seated in the front row as they do on the runway:

    IT BAG

Where to put your tape recorder, notebook, copy of the Daily, snacks (because the shows rarely leave time to pick up lunch!), Flip Cam and flats? In your signature It bag of course. A bag makes a fabulous statement for you that says you're in the know and have an insatiable desire for all things luxurious. Check out the bags will keep all eyes on you at the Tents this season:

    KILLER HEELS

If you were following Ferocia and I through last year's Fashion Week, you know my ankle injury barely stopped me from parading around in heels throughout the city to attend shows. Flats may be more comfortable (and safe, in my case) but Fashion Week calls for the hottest 5-6 inch heels of the season. And I just have to oblige. Indulge in some statement-making heels to accompany your designer dresses---just keep the flats nearby in your bag.

    SHADES

Be it Summer, Spring, Winter or Fall, a pair of shades is a Fashion Week staple. And, in all honesty, they're great for hiding tired, weary eyes after your 6th 9am-10pm day of going from show-to-show. And they just take an outfit to rockstar level, don't they? Check out our faves.

Getting the look down pact for Fashion Week is 75% of the battle. Follow this checklist and prepare to be whisked into shows and stopped repeatedly to have your picture taken for 'Street Glam' columns.

And of course, tune into The Glamazons Blog for daily, in-depth coverage of the Spring 2011 shows.

    Let the countdown begin...

    Kisses,

    Coutura
