Notice Any Similarities?

Many blogs, magazines, and tabloids publicize plastic surgery gone wrong, but what about plastic surgery gone...the same? Celebrities often elect to undergo face lifts, brow lifts and/or injectable procedures such as those with Botox or Juvederm in an effort to look youthful. However, rather than look youthful, numerous procedures, or incorrect procedures can make their faces look artificial. Take a look at the following before and after photos of well-known celebrities who have similar facial features after speculated plastic surgery procedures:

    Joan Rivers

    Daryl Hannah

    Lil Kim

    Jocelyn Wildenstein

Angelina Jolie - Most Requested Celebrity Features by Patients

The newest members of the Pitt-Jolie family are twin babies who were born in July. She gave birth to twins just 3 months ago and she looked great on the red carpet on Saturday for the New York City premiere of her new movie "Changeling." Where did all the baby weight go?
A recent poll conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery revealed that, when asked which celebrity's features they most wanted, a majority of patients would like to resemble Angelina Jolie. No surprise there! She has many defining and beautiful features that are considered aesthetically appealing; including her curves, her voluminous lips and defined cheekbones. It is not uncommon in our office for patients to bring in photos from magazines and ask if their nose can be chiseled, or lips can be filled to look more like hers. (Rest assured, physical perfection is neither standard nor natural: look back at her early photos as a teen and ones from now and you can see she has likely undergone rhinoplasty to narrow and refine her nose).
In an article in My Park Magazine, Brad Pitt's abs were also mentioned as one of the most requested celebrity features by patients. While it is not unusual for patients to request to resemble certain features or body parts of celebrities, it is important to have realistic expectations when undergoing plastic surgery. No one is perfect - not even Angelina Jolie!

Congratulations to Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds - Married this past weekend

Here's some proof that Scarlett is one of the most beautiful people in Hollywood:
    From an article on makemeheal.com
In Touch Magazine "Best Pair of Breasts in Hollywood"
Esquire and FHM Magazine "Sexiest Woman Alive"
She was awarded second place in the "Most Kissable Lips" contest

Now, the verdict is still out as to whether she has undergone a rhinopolasty procedure. By the looks of these pictures, the bridge of her nose appears narrower and her tip is less bulbous. She has not admitted to having her nose surgically altered and actually was upset by an article in US Weekly Magazine that claimed she was one of Hollywood's many actresses to undergo cosmetic surgery. It could be the make-up, lighting and photography.....but I guess we'll never know!

Botox is Abundant in Hollywood!

Now we all know Katy Couric gets her fair share of Botox!

Some have accused Nicole Kidman of having too much Botox. On celebritybodygossip.com Dr. Martin Braun, is quoted saying, "She looks like a bat with too much of an (outer) brow lift. The middle of the brow’s been dropped. She’s crying when she accepts her Oscar, but nothing is moving.”

Simon Cowell admits to having Botox treatments. Simon discusses the vanity of all TV stars in an article in Us Magazine. "To be honest with you, I can't think of one person who is on TV who isn't vain. It's the nature of the beast. If you are on TV then you have a vanity, for sure. Just admit it! Why not?”

Vanessa Williams has also admitted to Barbara Walters in an ABC interview that she receives Botox. She is quoted, "I certainly do Botox, which I definitely think that almost every woman that I know has [done]," she said. "And it's a miracle drug, no cutting, nothing..."

Botox can help reduce wrinkles by relaxing the muscles of the face that create those wrinkles. Common areas treated are the forehead, glabella (or between the eyes) and crow's feet. Botox has been widely tested and used for over 20 years. It is also FDA approved to treat axillary hyperhidrosis, strabismus, blepharospasm and cervical dystonia.

Plastic Surgery, The Celebrity

Welcome to this new blog about plastic surgery. In this world, cosmetic plastic surgery itself has become the celebrity. I am constantly bombarded with images, blogs, websites, TV shows, and radio talk about the subject. I am asked to comment by media on who has done what and when, what works and doesn't, and the latest trends in the industry. It's become crazy! When I went to medical school I had no idea what the future would behold.

On the other hand, my practice is largely made up of young and middle-aged women seeking surgical treatment of some problem or anatomic area of aesthetic concern that has been bothering them for some time. They are normal people. They come to me with legit concerns, and do not want to look overstretched, overstuffed and overdone; in fact, often they don't even want anyone to notice. So for my first post I thought it appropriate to bring to light a news story I saw today on MSNBC.com. The title was "'Ugly' is the New Beautiful".

The article said that one talent agency in New York City (where I live and practice) goes out of its way to look for unique models who are not considered traditionally beautiful. It said, "According to agency founder Simon Rogers, "beauty really does come in all shapes and sizes," and in the modeling industry, there's room for all. "We now represent a really candid cross-section of what America is," he said." So step aside, supermodels, because at this agency, "Ugly" looks for people who are from every walk of life!

As a plastic surgeon I agree with appreciating beauty (and "ugly") in all its forms. Although a lot of people would say plastic surgery makes everyone look a certain way, I would argue that it absolutely does not... and good plastic surgery ideally is designed and individualized based upon one person's anatomy and desires. Good cosmetic surgery may even go undetected. We'll see if celebrities seek that willingly (or unwillingly) as we go forward here.

So on that note, enjoy, and thanks for stopping by!
