Celebs are Celebrating Their Health

Webster's dictionary defines "celebrity" as "a famous or celebrated person". Though many stars are celebrated for their beauty, it may be the vast array of health problems that accompany obesity that have some celebs getting noticed after turning to bariatric or weight-loss surgery. Obesity increases the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, and degenerative joint disease.

There are various bariatric procedures, all of which are usually effective for weight loss. Though many patients achieve their weight loss goal, it is sometimes necessary to undergo aesthetic surgery following a bariatric procedure. When the weight is gone, excess skin is often left behind on various parts of the body.

An abdominoplasty can be performed to remove excess skin surrounding the stomach. A more-encompassing procedure, a belt lipectomy, works to remedy excess skin surrounding the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Still some patients require a brachioplasty, to remove excess skin from the upper arms.

Celebs who may have undergone aesthetic procedures following their bariatric surgery include Star Jones, Carnie Wilson, Roseanne Barr, Randy Jackson, and Al Roker. Before considering any surgical procedure or weight loss plan, it is important to consult with licensed physician.

A 'Mommy Tuck' for Angie?

After the recent debut of Angelina Jolie's new movie, Changeling, directed by Clint Eastwood, rumors began to circulate that the mother of six, may have undergone an abdominoplasty. There is no doubt that Angelina Jolie looked absolutely stunning, after giving birth just three months ago, but was surgery the secret of her beauty? Star magazine quoted a Jolie-Pitt family insider, saying that Angelina preferred the term 'mommy tuck' instead of tummy tuck, but that Angelina did in fact undergo surgery.

Though Angelina Jolie has been out of the spotlight for the past three months, she most likely used this time to exercise and eat properly, in order to lose weight. (Let's not forget the great genes she was blessed with). Also, women also often lose weight after giving birth, due to breastfeeding. Either way, the happy mommy of six looks great, just released another movie, and remains on top of the world!

New State Law in California sets Welcomed Precedent for Patient Safety after Donda West's Death

The California Senate has approved new laws relating to plastic surgery following the untimely death of Donda West. The Senate announced on Thursday that the new laws require patients to undergo a physical examination before any surgery takes place (we as plastic surgeons call this a "medical clearance" and it is obtained in order to assess the medical status of patients undergoing elective surgery; seems pretty basic and common sense, huh?).

Senator Mark Ridley Thomas admitted that the new legislation was in direct response to West's postoperative death in November last year. Ridley-Thomas told the Los Angeles Times: "Many of us are concerned about the quality of care extended to those who receive elective surgery.” Source: Taletela.com

West was undergoing a tummytuck, or abdominoplasty, and liposuction combined with a breast reduction shortly before the time of her death. Here is the story as it broke on FoxNewsLive when I was interviewed about it.

I hope this will inspire similar legislation all over the United States for the sake of patient safety. Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, credentialing in local hospitals, and verification of licensure and any disciplinary action are all important things for consumers to research when picking a plastic surgeon these days.
