Introducing...Glamazon Margo!

    Glamazons,

We gave you a couple hints on what we have in store in 2011: a facelift, coming out parties and lot of other glamazing ventures. As The Glamazons brand expands, our team of writers is growing as well.

We reached out to you via Facebook and Twitter, and were so pleased with the overwhelming response of smart, snarky, stylish writers who want to be an Official Glamazon.

Sidenote: It's not too late to send your resume and samples to theglamazonsblog@gmail.com by the way. We're looking for social media mavens, writers and graphic designers so send away!

Now, we're proud to announce the first addition to our team: Glamazon Margo.

This beauty-obsessed glamour girl hails from the Sunshine State (Florida, of course!). Besides hitting the beach, working out at the gym and watching football (she loves the Gators!), writing and socializing with new people are her pasttimes. Well, that and playing dress up. The thought of a pair of killer heels paired with the perfect dress finished with a flawlessly adorned face makes her gitty with joy.

Margo landed her first beauty writing position during her sophomore year of college and she’s been hooked ever since. The highlight of her college career was interning in the beauty department at The Magazine with our very own Ferocia. When she’s not working her day job in PR, you can find this self-proclaimed multimedia maven blogging, shooting and editing video, comparing makeup swatches, lathering her lips with gloss or munching on gummy bears. All with a smile on her perfectly made-up face.

Join us in welcoming Glamazon Margo to the Wonderful World of The Glamazons!

    Kisses/xo,

    Coutura & Ferocia

Coutura's Five Personal Highlights of 2010

As I'm creating my vision board for 2011, I started to think about all the great moments I've experienced in the past year. (Btw, you already heard about one of my BIG New Year's Resolutions to go natural...excited!)

Confession: I'm always moving so fast that sometimes I forget to slow down, breathe and marvel in all the amazing blessings that have come my way in the last twelve months.

So...with that said, here are five highlights and the lessons they taught me in 2010. Take a look and tell me yours in the comment section.

    1 - Becoming a director of a website

When I started this blog, it was soo a way to express myself and my obsessive love for all things Fashion. Little did I know, it would pave a career path. Since leaving The Magazine, I have been blessed with so many opportunities in the digital space, primarily due to this blog, which makes me overwhelmingly proud we took the risk to get it started.

    2 - MET Gala

After attending the MET Gala this year, one of the writers I look up to (who has an amaze blog, Black Bridal Bliss) said it was on her bucket list. It was that comment that made me slow down from all the impending deadlines and assignments to say, wow something amazing just happened.

I partied with people that I have always admired from Karl Lagerfeld to Oprah Winfrey to Sarah Jessica Parker to Anna Wintour. The night was so magical I still can't even believe it happened. The lesson here: live in the moment!

    3 - The Glamazons Blog

Omg, I love this blog! This year, we saw record numbers in traffic (woot!) and next year is opening up so many opportunities including a site makeover we're so excited about it!

From waxing poetic on our career dramas, to dishing about parties we attend (Glamour Women of the Year Awards, Why Did I Get Married Too? Premiere above) to interviewing our favorite stars (Kandi, Chrisette Michele, Ameriie, Fergie, Letoya Luckett, June Ambrose, Sessilee Lopez!) to going on trips (ESSENCE Music Festival, Ford in Atlanta) Glamazons is truly a labor of love.

This year also saw us recognized by other media outlets and fashion brands like Rachel Roy, iVillage and WEEN. I'm excited to see where 2011 will take us!

    4 - Penn Station Outreach

The beginning of this recap should, in no way, make you think life in New York City is easy. For every moment of excitement where Ferocia and I are literally living our dreams, there's some struggle to bring us back to reality: almost being evicted, lead/bed bugs/mice taking over our apartment (true story!), getting laid off, writing for sites and not getting paid, those moments where you strongly consider going to Jersey/Texas to a warm home with food and a regular day job.

But none of those rough times compare to that experienced by homeless people here in the city, especially in the Winter. The Penn Station Outreach helped drive that point home for me. Just a few trips offering warm food and beverages, and coats/gloves to people in Penn Station, and to see how touched they were by kindness from a random stranger, made me grateful for the apartment and life I do have. I definitely want to do more, and give more, in 2011.

    5 -  The Word 'No'

Another reality check that quells all talk of life in NYC being easy? The word 'No.'

It was at the Black Girls Rock! Awards when Raven-Symone matter-of-factly said, "If someone tells me No, I just say: you're not the person I should be talking to." A light bulb went off on my head then. To accomplish something great, you often have to stand on a ledge and do things people have never done, or never thought possible.

Ferocia and I have already been blessed with opportunities that most people don't expect this early in the game. And every time we've had doubts or second thoughts about pursuing a goal, the thought comes in our heads: "Well, the worst they could say is 'No' ... and even then, we can find another way."

And the funny thing is, most times, they DO say Yes. One of the most important qualities to have when trying to succeed is resilience. That was one of the lessons I learned in 2010 and now, in 2011, 'No' is no longer a dream crusher, or a roadblock, for me.

What are your highlights, and lessons from 2010? And what's on your vision board? Tell me in the comments.

    Kisses,

    Coutura

Going Natural: Coutura's New Year's Beauty Resolution

I was scared into going natural. Seriously.

After seeing an older woman's hair reach frightening levels of thinness, I did my own backtracking and saw that my hair has gotten gradually, but noticeably, thinner over the years. While there are certainly many factors that contributed to this (age, diet, tight weaves are among them), the most prominent one is relaxers, specifically how frequently I used them.

Some background: I begged, pleaded and cried to my Mother to get my first relaxer when I was 12 years old. In my opinion, my natural kinky hair couldn't be more out of style; I longed for flowing straight hair like models and my girlfriends who craved the creamy crack.

Since then, I've seen my full, thick, brown hair get thinner and thinner, reaching its pinnacle with a hair dye job my freshman year of college (below - yes, I've been so, so bad).

Though my hair grew braided underneath the weaves (see below), it never had that same gorgeous texture that my Momma passed down to me. And it may never be the same, but I want some semblance of it back.

And also, cue my interview with Chrisette Michele, "I'm tired of having things sewn in my head." Amen and amen! P.S. I'm sure you've noticed, I've been asking everyone in interviews from Chrisette Michele to Lisa Price to the writer of LoveBrownSugar for natural hair advice.

Now I very well may get a weave again (below) should the wind blow me toward the specialty hair shop, but I want to be able to wear my OWN hair curly (and feel the air on my scalp!) and straighten/blow dry it as I please.

And last reason? I flirted with curly natural-looking hair (weaved) over the summer and totally fell in love.

So with all that said, 2011 is the year of natural hair for me. I'm not doing a big chop, instead opting for a long transition so you'll see me out and about with extensions in the meantime. Still, I am nervous, terrified, excited and relieved and obsessing over every inch of natural hair that grows in (DYING to know what my "curl pattern" is cue LoveBrownSugar).

Though I am scared beyond belief, I will share every step of the process with you including a consultation with Anthony Dickey (natural hair God and creator of Hair Rules).

But for now, I'm asking you natural-haired beauties:

-What advice can you give me?
-Products, products, products. What do you use?
-What's been the best and worst part of your natural hair experience?

    Wish me luck!

    Kisses,

    Coutura

The Glamazons are WEEN Women to Watch!

Remember when I went to the 2nd Annual WEEN Awards in September and left feeling more inspired than ever? Yes, the night I met my personal she-roes Soledad O'Brien, Nia Long, Valeisha Butterfield (the Co-Founder and Chair of WEEN) and a host of other stars like Kandi Burress, Hot 97's Angie Martinez, Letoya Luckett, Estelle and more!

I had a renewed sense of purpose after leaving the red carpet where my she-roes spoke so passionately about uplifting women and inciting positive change in their communities. I felt honored to even be in the presence of those women, and told them as much (Valeisha and Soledad were particularly thankful and gracious). That night was one of my defining moments this year.

Fast-forward to two weeks ago, and Ferocia and I were approached for an interview for WEEN Online as WEEN Women to Watch by another amazing blogger, Dee of The D Life. Wow!

I never imagined when I was asking questions on the WEEN red carpet that The Glamazons would be recognized by such an amazing organization. Needless to say, we jumped at the chance to participate!

Read our interview here. We cover everything from giving back to Grace Jones to Fashion Week to the celeb in need of a Glamazon makeover. Tell us what you think.

And special thanks to Dee for featuring us, and to Valeisha for being an endless source of inspiration. We are truly honored.

    Kisses,

    Coutura
