GLAM OR SHAM?: Heidi Klum's Finger Waves

The beauty blogosphere is all abuzz right now on the topic of Heidi Klum's finger waves in the front/bun in the back hair 'do she rocked Monday night at the amfAR Milano dinner during Milano Fashion Week. Being that I myself am one of the most glamazing beauty editor-turned-bloggers that ever lived (yeah, sometimes it's ok to toot your own horn, Glamazons, because if you don't who will?!) I feel that it's important to bring it up on this blog as well.
Not because it's Heidi Klum (alright, part of the reason is because it's Heidi Klum and I have a total girl crush on her) but more so because I think finger waves are uber glam and love the look! So, I myself vote this look GLAM. I mean, why would you think it's a SHAM?! Not many women can pull off finger waves and Heidi is definitely one who can. Let's take a closer look, shall we? Here's how it looks from the front:

    And here's the back:

Upon closer inspection, you can see that it looks as if she's intertwined her hair with some sparkly silver tinsel. I'm wondering if she attended the Prada show while there in Milan? Because you know this same finger waved hair 'do was also created on the models by Redken Creative Consultant Guido (except he created two knots at the back of the head instead of the one that Heidi is rocking). Here's what it looked like:

Believe it or not, there are only two products that you really need to create this look: a rat tail comb (to create the waves) and some super strong holding gel (like the Redken Hardwear 16 Super-Strong Sculpting Gel).
So, what do you think, Glamazons? Is this look GLAM or a SHAM? As a result of seeing this, will you soon be rocking finger waves, too?!

GET THE LOOK (Spring 2011 Fashion Week Edition): Marc Jacobs

Alright, Glamazons. This is the one makeup look that made my heart stand still for about 2.5 seconds after first eyeing it. (Last season, the same thing happened after eyeing the beauty look from Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. show. It also didn't help that she was standing right next to me while chatting with her hairstylist Danilo. Talk about some major swoonage!)
But, back to Marc Jacobs. So (as you know from Coutura's previous post) the clothes from the Spring 2011 were all about the 1970's.
Once again, Marc teamed up with Francois Nars, Founder & Creative Director of NARS cosmetics (that's him above working backstage) to create the makeup look and Guido Palau from Redken to create the hair.
Inspired by Anjelica Houston circa 1970, Nars said that he wanted all of the models (60 to be exact) look "iconic with a modern approach."
"Marc had images of what he wanted the makeup to look like - mimicking the colors of the clothing but not matching exactly."
Nars painted around the eyes with this gorgeous glossy shade of deep green, added a tinge of pink to the cheeks (using 'Orgasm' of course) and rounded out the look with a matte lip color.
Here are the products that he used:

-NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (new for Spring 2011; for now, try a light application of the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation)
    -NARS Night Porter Eyeshadow
-NARS Noveau Monde Duo Eyeshadow (new for Spring 2011; for now, try the olive side of the Earth Angel Duo Eyeshadow)
-NARS Celebrate Soft Touch Shadow Pencil (new for Spring 2011; for now, the the green side of Rated R Duo Eyeshadow)
-NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara
    -NARS Volga Pure Matte Lipstick
-NARS African Queen Lip Liner Pencil
    -NARS Mambo Eyeliner Pencil

And did I mention that each of the models' eyebrows were bleached?! I did think that was a little bit extreme until I saw the finished look. After that, it made perfect sense!
For the hair, Palau created four different styles for the show: a finger curl; a graduated bob; a thick wave; and one that appeared to be a bunch of frizz with a side part. Each hairstyle style was inspired by the 1930's.
Check out the looks below and let us know what you think of it. Me? I plan on rocking that sexy, smokey hunter green eye like right now! (It's definitely giving me life.) The hair? While I appreciate the look of it, I don't think it's a style that I'd personally wear myself. (Although I do think the second look is pretty cute!)

Backstage Beauty: Alexander Wang Spring 2011

Now here's a fun ingredient that I've never seen used backstage during the five years that I've been covering backstage beauty during Fashion Week: clay!
Alright, so maybe it's not really that fun because all I could think about while watching the models get this stuff put into their hair is what would one use to get it back out?! Would it be just regular 'ole drugstore shampoo or something fancier? What if you had to use something weird like pure alcohol?! Did the models sign consent forms ahead of time to get this stuff put in? And what about the ones that had shows immediately afterwards?! Well, I guess all those thoughts are really besides the point. The more important point at hand right now is why the clay was even used in the first place. (Leave it to Alexander Wang to even think of such a thing. Apparently he was channeling the punk rock skater girls found in the East Village here in NYC. Thrilling.)
Of course, it wasn't like pure clay (or at least I don't think it was). According to hairstylist Guido Palau (for Redken), the stuff was "fuller's earth with white pigment." (So that's not officially clay, right?! Maybe this would be classified as a "clay-like mixture" then? Hmmm....)
Palau, who described the look as the "new-age traveler" pulled all of the models' hair back into messy knots and then created spikes. The white clay mix was used to block out any sort of natural looking hair color and painted onto the models' hair in streaks as well as onto the spikes of the hair. He finished the look with Redken Forceful 23 hairspray followed by a blast of heat from the blow dryer to "bake" in the clay. (Yes, he used the word bake. It took all I had not to start giggling.)

Over in makeup, Diane Kendel (for MAC Cosmetics) described the look as "very cool." So cool that all she used to create this look was moisturizer and brow bleach. (Or maybe the correct verbage would be bleached brows?) That's it. Weird, right? (That's what I thought anyways.) But, don't let me be the judge of this: what do you think? I mean, I obviously wouldn't wear a look like this ever in life (my skin shudders at the thought of having clay put into my perfectly dyed blonde hair) but what about you?

Backstage Beauty: Chris Benz Resort 2011 Collection

The only thing that I would wake up at 7 a.m. for at this point in my life would be to see some great fashion, hear about an awesome new beauty product, get my hair styled by a phenomenal celebrity hairstylist or well, ahem, YOU know.
So when I received the e-mail asking if I wanted to come and check out the hair and makeup looks + view Chris Benz's 2011 Resort Collection, I immediately said yes. (Even if I did have to be there at 8 a.m.)

But, oh what glorious pieces Mr. Benz has created! (Don't you just die over these shoes?!) They're so gorge and make me want to take a vaca immediately (which, as you know from a previous post I'm in such dire need for haha).
Inspired by the women of the 1950's, the hair was pulled back into a retro faux bob.
Head hairstylist John Ruidant (for Redken) used lots of Redken Body Full Amplifier along with Redken Forceful 23 Aersol Hair Spray. And that gorge magenta lip? Why, that's a shade from Lancome called Tender Kiss. Love! What do you think of the hair and makeup look, Glamazons?

Backstage Beauty: Patricia Fields Swimsational Disco Soiree

Hey Glamazons! So, as you know, I attended Patricia Fields' Swimsational Disco Soiree Tuesday night. The best part? I got the inside scoop on the hair and makeup looks created for the show! (Which, you all know, I LIVE for hahaha).
The makeup look was created by makeup artist Charlie for Vincent Longo. The inspiration? 1980's mannequins and soap opera stars!
"Pat wanted a very strong woman, because you kind of have to be to wear a bikini," Charlie said of the makeup look. "We created a strong eye that was quite light in the inner corner and then dark and elongated at the outer corner. We wanted it to be sooty, dramatic. For the cheeks, we used strong peach and pink blushes, a cheek for a brave, strong female. Lips depended on the skin tone of the girl: darker skin received a fuschia pink and lighter skin got a dramatic red lip."

Although the makeup was fierce, the hair was my favorite part! Lead hairstylist Rodney Cutler (for Redken; that's him at work below!) created a braided, fishtail updo...a great look for summer that's easy to do and looks like will keep you nice and cool. (It's also a cool alternative to a high bun). Here's how he created the look:

-Prep hair by applying Redken Align 12 Protective Straightening Lotion and blow dry through with a medium brush.
-Tightly gather into a high ponytail on the very top of the head (about three inches fromt he hair line) and secure with an elastic.
-To create the fish tail braid, split the hair to be braided into two equal sections. Pull a small strand of hair from the left section and add it to the right section. Then, pull a small strand of hair from the right section and add it to the left. This should create an "X." Repeat until all the hair is used. Secure with a plastic band.
-Pin the braid in upon itself right at the hairline.
-Finish the look with Redken's Vinyl Glam 02 Mega Shine Spray for shine and Force 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray for extra strong hold.
-Take a small piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic and secure with a bobby pin.
