New York Fashion Week: Marc Jacobs Spring 2011

If I could choose a decade to fashionably transport myself to, it'd be the magical era of the '70s. The Summer of Love was full of flamboyant, free-spirited bliss with wild, voluminous hair, sweeping maxidresses and energetic prints. Marc Jacobs gave this glorious decade a new-age flair with an aesthetic as sophisticated as it was enticing.

His makeover of seventies fashion started with the materials: Style.com cites gauzes, voiles and etamines as his fabrics of choice. The look of the collection follows suit.

Colors are explosive, energetic and vivid with oranges, pinks, purples and browns taking centerstage. While he shows platforms, these just aren't any sandals---Marc Jacobs' platforms are glittery and gold. His accessories run the gamut from exquisite floral hairpieces and elaborate necklaces to streamlined handbags and bright wide-brimmed hats.

The sophistication emerges in tailored khaki or satin jumpsuits, wideleg pants and trench coats that blend the structured silhouettes and cinched waists of the '40s with the free-spirited air of the '70s.

Prints varied from '70's dots to Missoni-esque zig-zag patterns to stripes (with circle-pattern pasties around the bust!). Talk about fun with fashion. Flutter sleeves, wide floral belts and glorious sheer maxidresses also work to give this collection pizazz and personality.

Bringing the '70s into the 21st century, metallic shorts and stripes add a dose of decadent glamour. This is the Summer of Love dressed up and transported to a new level of refinement and class.

Take a look at the collection modeled by Jourdan Dunn, Karlie Kloss, Alessandra Ambrosio, Shena Moulton, Joan Smalls, Anais Mali, Rose Cordero, Jeneil Williams and more.

New York Fashion Week: Z Spoke by Zac Posen Spring 2011

Zac Posen must have been in a vibrant mood when designing for Z Spoke. The designer, who is showing his eponymous line overseas, is one of the few to drench a collection in bold and decadent color this season. The result? A breath of fresh air among Spring 2011 lines that have been overwhelmingly rooted in neutrals and whites.

With punchy colors from red to yellow, Zac Posen took a lively and spirited approach to design---perhaps, a sign that he's courting a younger customer with diffusion line, Z Spoke. Imaginative prints like cartoons (created by Daisy de Villeneuve) and fruit energized the front of dresses and jumpsuits. Colors like orange, red, turquoise, yellow, brown and green were purposefully mixed together, making for an exuberant fashion statement.

While the collection was fun, it was still steeped in femininity and sex appeal. Dresses were flouncy with high hemlines and low necklines. Jumpsuits were belted at the waist, accentuating a womanly figure as only Zac knows how.

Lace was brilliantly weaved into the collection with lingerie peeking out of plaid dresses. Sheer panels bared the midriff, giving little black dresses a flirty sensibility.

Even the accessories managed to be both youthful and mature with cartoon prints and bold color-blocking adorning chic handbags. But the final gown was a sleek black number with cut-outs that was all woman.

Check out the collection, modeled by Crystal Renn, Sessilee Lopez and Rose Cordero, below.

New York Fashion Week: Nicole Miller Spring 2011

    Okay, Glamazons, I'm excited.

Remember when I said Nicole Miller presents collection after collection of fabulous, but predictable, ruched dresses? Well, she surprised and thrilled me this season with a line devoid of her signature ruching. What showed instead were breathlessly beautiful garments which embodied the motif of ease and grace that will define the upcoming Spring season.

Silhouttes were fluid with airy yet fitted lines that were full of brevity. White was a strong trend (in several collections like BCBGMaxAzria and Port 1961 as well) but here, we see the hue in great separates that provide a tailored yet effortless fit on the body. Highlights were the sharp bone and beige trench coats and vests that brought structure to fluid sheer dresses and tops.

Miller experimented with sheer fabric in the most elegant way, creating sex appeal with an air of sophistication. This delights me as it shows that even though she's used new fabrics and experimented with a different aesthetic, she hasn't lost her penchant for creating sultry, womanly garments. This fact will surely delight her more trendy fans like Cassie, Keisha Whitaker and June Ambrose who filled the front row (pics below).

Prints were also a theme on the Nicole Miller runway with gorgeous blue and white watercolor and black and white painterly patterns showing up on languid, draped dresses.

The look is much more refined than previous seasons but garments, like the sheer top and skirt shown here on Rose Cordero, are packed with Miller's signature edge, youthfulness and femininity. I'm so impressed with this collection. Bravo!

    Love the sleek, colorblocked heels!

Here's Nicole Miller backstage with the models.

What do you think of the line?

And check out the fashionable front row:

Cassie and Keisha Whitaker, wife of Forest Whitaker and co-owner of Kissable Couture with Celebrity Makeup Artist, A.J. Crimson made for a gorgeous front row.

Miss Cassie chose a sexy little black dress for the festivities.

Love Keisha Whitaker but not my favorite fashion moment from her.

New York Fashion Week: Christian Siriano Spring 2011

The inspiration? "African, Indian and Chinese influences mixed with measures of elegant opulence." The gowns? Extravagant, regal and stunning.

Christian Siriano delivered what he does best at his Spring 2011 shows with dramatic red-carpet ready gowns with elaborate embellishments in ruffles and lots of tulle.

After mesmerizing the fashion industry with his watercolor print, Siriano unveiled a new pattern which he describes as a signature "Asian fabric print based on digital photographs showing different vantage points of Chinese and Buddhist temples combined with varying perspectives of Indian beading." In a word, captivating.

The color scheme of paprika, khaki, white and deep red sprinkled with flecks of gold signifies a new modern and refined direction for Siriano, who is possibly courting an older, more conservative woman who invests in luxurious clothes with frequency and without guilt.

Fashionistas, don't fear - his new shoes for Payless are still intriguing and creative, possessing the same IT factor of his Fall 2010 cone heels.

Still, given his source of inspiration (China, Africa, India), the collection left a lot to be desired. The Ready-To-Wear pieces---safari-style jackets, structured dresses, lightweight belted gowns and wide-legged trousers---were staid and safe for a designer of Siriano's caliber. As one attendee remarked, they looked cheap and pre-Project Runway. Ouch.

I'm always rooting for Christian Siriano and do recognize the need for a designer to create more commercial, wearable pieces in a troubled economy.

But Siriano was the one who we all counted on to dream and dare when designing (especially given the passing of a genius whom he was often linked to: Alexander McQueen). At least, his gowns offered some modicum of imagination and fancy.

Take a look at his collection and tell me what you think.
