A MUSICIANS RETIREMENT

Many musicians today who work the bands for hire markets tend to be aware of their current predicament but we at Talents For Asia wonder if they are aware of their future predicaments. How will they earn when they can’t be sold/promoted anymore? Will they have enough savings or a pension fund to fall back on? Do they have insurance for health issues? These are all very valid and real questions that have plagued us at Talents For Asia. Why?. Because from what we have seen, very few musicians from the band for hire market make it to the ranks of international celebrities, some even go back to their homes broken in many ways and live a life of poverty. Some however do have the knowledge to pre-arrange their retirement and can live a very comfortable life. 




Talents For Asia’s concern is for those who don’t have the knowledge to set up their own retirement situation and thus fall into a world of pain and suffering. We are of the opinion that musicians should take responsibility for their own financial future as they don’t have a cozy pension fund to fall back on and if you are a musician who has zero or next to no knowledge in managing your finances to create a secure future then we suggest you walk into a financial institution, like a bank of international standing and seek their advice on how you can start a retirement fund via monthly contributions. 






Now, in Malaysia we have the EPF (Employee’s Provident Fund) where in you contribute on a monthly basis and then you can withdraw at age 50 and 55. In Singapore they have the CPF and in Philippines, you have options like S S S (Social Security) or PAG IBIG. Now these are the government based platforms that are available to you but if you are not comfortable in contributing to these various platforms, then walk into an International bank like HSBC or CITIBANK and try to speak to one of the many consultants they have and explain that you are a musician and you are looking to set up a retirement fund, they have various options they can recommend you to invest in via a monthly contribution. Talents For Asia would advice that you look at a big International bank so that your deposits are insured and risk is kept to a minimum. 




Another important much neglected factor is medical and basic healthcare, based on your capacity to earn an income, see a reputable insurance company also of international standing and get a policy that covers you till old age with full benefits from hospitalization to surgery even for major illnesses, Why? Because musicians are exposed to what is a very unhealthy lifestyle and the environment you work in is often polluted and you never know what will emerge out of the dark in a few years down the road. Having a fat savings account is also nice, but once you withdraw, it’s spent and you can’t get it back, thus we would advise you to have two to three other platforms where you can really secure your self. 




Most musicians will say; we don’t Earn Much”. If you can set aside 250 USD a month from the age of 25 then by the time your fifty, you should have a decent platform to retire on. For those of you who are older, try to increase your monthly savings or investment contributions to about 500 USD a month, so you can catch up where you have missed out on. If you’re not sure or if you feel that you lack knowledge and know how on setting up a retirement platform, don’t worry!… Just walk into a bank and they have many consultants who can advise you accordingly, look at low risk situations that are long term investments based on age which can yield profits which will fruit when you’re ready to retire. 




This is just so that you are independent of any family when it comes to your old age, but if your making millions, then you can save millions for a rainy day, but if your in a situation where your living month to month, then its really advisable for you to walk into a bank and get your self sorted out. You can also look at a business option to invest into that will help grow your money, but business is a gamble and highly risky, so even if you do decide to go into business, its best to have a fall back or what we call a safety net. Gone are the days where you have two or three children and pawn your old age on them. Times are changing an as the world evolves so will your child’s way of thinking and thus it would be wrong to pawn off your old age on them. As a musician, the work you do is not easy and the hardship you go through having to leave your homes and families is really not something every one can do, but that’s the road you walk thus Talents For Asia is of the position that this advice is really well overdue as some musicians start out very young and from their first months salary they are caught up in a world of expensive mobile phones, laptops and many other worldly possessions but very little thought is put into what happens when they can’t earn anymore. They are also musicians who send their entire salary home to their families and that is something very commendable but there must be an amount that is withheld and placed into a retirement savings platform, be it government driven or private.

In The Philippines, The Government Years Ago Had Instilled An Un – Spoken Re-Stricted Travel Block On All Filipino’s. If You Don’t Have POEA, Or IF Your Not A Celebrity, Politician Or Look Rich Enough, To Travel Outside Of The Philippines Is Not Possible For Average Filipino’s. This Is The Reality Of The Filipino People. They Are Prisoners In Their Own Country And Where There Are Not Enough Jobs, Hence Poverty Is Going To Be An Everlasting Problem. 






For Musicians This Hits Close To Home. Talents For Asia Has Just Learned Last Night Of Four (4) Filipino Musicians Who Were Off Loaded From A Flight Bound For Dubai. The Musicians End Destination Was Not Dubai But A Country Which Has No Philippines Embassy And They Were On Their Way For An Audition. As Such Before Their Departure They Had Called The POEA Office For Advice And POEA Had Said To Apply For Visa At The Nearest Embassy Of The Country You Are Going For Audition In, And Ask The Potential Employer For A Letter Of Invitation. 








All this Was Done And When they Were Stopped By Officers Of The Philippines Immigration before Walking On The Plane, Mind You They Cleared Philippines Immigration But Were Then Stopped And Ask To Offload, Upon Questioning The Officer For the Reason Of The Offload The Officer Kept Silent, Then Band Then Asked The Officer, How Do you Apply POEA When The Country They Are Going To Has NO PHILIPPINES EMBASSY, And They Are Only Going For An Audition, Not Employment, The Officer Then Still Kept Silent And Said OFFLOAD. 










As Such, This Begs The Question, How Does POEA Or The Philippines Government Classify Auditions? 2) How Come The Philippines Immigration Officer Questioned Why A Visa For The Country The Band Was Going To Was Issued From Another Country; When They Should Know That The Country Of Travel To Has No Embassy In The Philippines.? After The Musicians Had Informed The Officer That There Was No Embassy Of The Philippines In That Particular Country And That That Country They Were Going To Had No Embassy In Philippines They Were Still OFFLOADED. 






Is This Not A Form Of FORCED IMPRISONMENT By Denying People Their Rights To Leave The Country? Now If You Do The Math, What Would Be The Employers Cost Should He Have To Travel To The Nearest Country To Him Just To Apply For POEA For Four (4) People To Audition? And Then Travel Again To Facilitate POEA For Employment. Now In The Case Where They Have Offloaded, Who Pays For The Losses Of The Tickets And Money Spent? 






If The Government Of The Philippines Wants To Close Its Doors Under The Pretext Of Protecting Its People, then It Should Also Have Funds to Re-Pay All Cost In Cases Like This Where Philippines Immigration Officers Seem To Lack Common Sense. It’s a Sad Day To Hear All This, When The Philippines Is So Dependent On The OFW Remittance. Talents For Asia Is Not Attacking Anyone But Is Trying To Show The Lack Of Logic, Human Decency And Human Rights Violation In A Law That Can Only Be Classified As Pre- Historic. 






We Believe That It Is Time For Change In A System That Hinders The Filipino Musician And People For Seeking A Better Life As The POEA Process Is Only Beneficial to The Philippines Government And Not The Employer Or People. It Would Be Better To Launch A Special POEA Identification Card That Has A Microchip And It Can Function As Digital Permit Card Upon Departure Of Filipino’s Having This Valid For Only 12 Months And Having It Equipped With Insurance And All Information Needed Will Ease And Resolve Issues Like We Have Mentioned Above, Because Now The Potential Employer Has A Clear Cut Case For Legal Action Not Only Against The Officer Who Offloaded WITHOUT DUE JUSTIFICATION But Also Against The Philippines Immigration For Cost As Now Tickets Are Wasted. If You Launch A POEA Card, It Would Promote Legal Employment As All you Have To Do Is Simplify The Card Application Process By Having Filipino’s Apply For It In Person. This Also Stems Out The Problems With Fixers, It Instantly Provides For Data Collection On OFW’s And It Makes The Whole Employment Process Easier For Foreign Companies Which Will Then Further Generate Greater Employment Due to A Process That Is Fair To All. 






It Really Amazes And At The Same Time Ticks Talents For Asia Off Because The Musicians As Mentioned In Yesterday's Night’s Incident Were Really Not At Fault, And No Act Of Corruption Was Attempted By The Musicians They Were Leaving On The Merit Of Their LEGAL Documentation. Talents For Asia Can Now Understand Why So Many Filipino’s Who Leave The Philippines, Don’t Want To Go Home Again. Because Its Really Like A Prison Sentence, You Can’t Leave At Your Own Free Will, Unlike Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, And Or Even Malaysia. As We At Talents For Asia Start To Look At This Particular Incident, We Are Starting To Understand Why So Many Filipino Musicians Are So Tired And Sick Of Their Own Country And Rather live Overseas For As Long As They Can, Simply Because When They Get Home, Its Just Too Much Hassle For Them to Go Out Again. 






So Really Is Talents For Asia The Fool For Advocating At The Top Of Our Lungs, The POEA Law?; Which Now Looks To Talents For Asia As A Law That Only Benefits A Few And Enshrines The Majority In Poverty? We Are Now At The Cross Roads Of Reality And What Do We Do,? Talents For Asia Promotes Direct Employment As We Are Only A Promotions Platform, We Are Not An Agency. Yet We Can Feel The Anger And Frustration Of The Filipino Musicians And We Wonder If Ever The New President Will Ever Open The Gates At The Airports And Allow His People To Be Free Or Will He Continue To Enslave his People In A Situation Which Only Benefits The Minority And Not The Majority? 






Again, We Are Stressing That We Are Not Attacking But We Are Just Airing Our Queries And Thoughts, And We At Talents For Asia Are Wondering What Is The Solution? And Who Will Lead The Call For The Freedom Of Filipino Musicians? And The Filipino People to Travel Internationally Without Being Made To Answer Questions That Don’t Concern Any Philippines Immigration Officer Or Even The Government As The End Of It All Is The Remittance Still Comes Back Anyway, Does It not? 






This Is Really A Discussion Worth Having Just To Tap Ideas That Can Lead To A Winning Situation For Both Sides Of The Divide. Talents For Asia Apologies If We Have Offended Anyone As Its Only Our Intention To Ask The Questions That Really Begs To Be Asked And Also To Create Room For Intelligent Discussions To Find Solutions That Can Really Help Ease The Burden Of The People. It Is Sad When You Have To Miss An Opportunity Because The People In Power Lack Commonsense And A Train Of Thought To Trust Legal Documentation And Also It Is Sad That They Lack Knowledge In Which Countries Have Embassies In Philippines. 






Maybe Its time Filipino Musicians Bind Together And Come Up With A Proposal That They Can Submit To Their Respective Senators And President For More Liberation At The Airport Gates For Them. We Hope This Article Spurs Creative Thinking Which Will Lead To The Generation Of Ideas Which Can Open The Gates And Free The Musicians. Talents For Asia Understands The Some Protection Is Needed, But That Can Be Done Via In A Different Manner That Does Not Cost People Jobs And Potential Employers Financial Loss. Times Have Changed And We Sincerely Feel That The Locks At The Airport Gates Should Be Removed And Other Documented Procedures Should Be Put Into Place Especially For Countries That Have No Philippines Embassies And Have No Diplomatic Missions In The Philippines. 






Let Us Hope That This Article Will Spur Creative, And Intelligent As Well As Un – Selfish Results, So That The Majority Will Benefit, After All, Philippines Is Suppose To Be A Democratic Country, Thus Why Not Have Democratic Laws . As They Say; Out With The Old And In With The New…

WHATS HAPPEN TO MUSIC TODAY?


In many of our articles, we have used the word evolution; Evolution in music has been rather drastic, what with the retirement of Phil Collins and the birth of artiste like Justin Bieber taking the Planet by storm. Gone are the days wherein you can here the soul of the drum beat in music played by musicians and recorded live. The Age of Digital Music has been born and it will not go away, Digital Music in its self is like a planet on its own evolving as technology becomes more and more advanced.


Talents For Asia wonders if there will ever re-vive the old school ways of recording music with a room full of instruments and not digital machines. Some how the human element in some music is really missing and there is no feel in it, its like trying to have a coke from and empty coke can. Maybe Talents For Asia is just slow in the catch up race in technology but the evolution in music is not only in technology but also in the lyrics.


Lyrics now days have become dull in Talents For Asia’s opinion, many of the words are repeated as if to resemble stuttering and repeative  not in a smart way but a rather lazy way as if to say that effort is not warranted. Talents For Asia feels that the music that has been released in the past year can do with a make-over, re-think and a lot of reproduction to make it sensible. It’s sad when you see something you love so much go down in such a bad way. Music is something that can heal wounds of hearts, feeds the hungry soul and also breaks all racial, religious and cultural borders.


Somehow, Musicians today fail to see how powerful the rhythm of a single song can change so the way the world looks at each other. Look back in time when Pink Floyd came out with The Wall and Live Aid was born, or when Michael Jackson dropped We Are The World. Music back then stood for something and it moved people in ways that helped evolve them in to better situations. Lyrics meant something then; Talents For Asia believes that there is always a song for each and very situation in life simply because music is the food of your soul and the gateway to understanding the individual performers heart mind and direction. Some how Talents For Asia is searching for that same feeling in today’s music but it seems to be lost.


Why does everything sound the same? This is really disturbing, has the industry that we so love lost its creativity? A good example is the song Fields Of Gold By Sting, now look at the Maxi Priest version, it’s the same but different in many ways. Yet it still has tremendous meaning and carries the same soothing, heartwarming feeling as the Sting Version. That creativity at work, in totality without question.


Talents For Asia feels its time for the industry to once again raise the quality and the entire production process from composing to production, If you caught the Jimmy Fallon Show you would understand when they did a remake of the Rebecca Black Friday Song and it was so much better then Rebecca Black's version of Friday and  he may have even made it sound trendy. Talents For Asia just simply believes that creative effort is lacking in the new tunes being released amongst the newer artiste.


Talents For Asia hopes this changes for the betterment of not only the industry but also just so that the people who fork out their hard earned dollars to buy your music will be given a real treat rather then and effortless 2 hour job..

SETTING THE TONE


We have heard many radio Dj’s and many of them on air are not what they appear to be off air, some are arrogant and think themselves to be of celebrity status simply because of the recognition they get in public, and some Dj’s  just try to hard to live out their radio persona. The two radio Dj’s  who helm Mornings With R Funk & Lil’G offer a reality that surpasses all boundaries of show business as a whole.


The sincerity in their tone, and energy which really makes the show what it is, offers a freshness and honesty that has not been visible in radio entertainment for a very long time. Mornings With R Funk & Lil’G has no airs, its simply classy radio with aim to brighten up ones morning. There is no sense of arrogance in their show at all, they are not self promotional and don’t behave like super stars.
