One Stitch Facelift

Check out this article below where Dr. Jennifer Walden is asked for her expert opinion about the new one stitch facelift on NY Daily News!

Is the so-called "one-stitch face-lift" really a fast pass to a youthful appearance?

The wrinkle-free results may not be as long-lasting as with a traditional operation, but the minimally invasive procedure is a hot ticket right now in cosmetic surgery.

Two reasons. It's quicker and cheaper than a traditional face-lift, which requires more inpatient care time.

"There's a strong trend right now to perform less invasive procedures for facial rejuvenation," Dr. Jennifer Walden, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital told the Daily News. "People want instant results and minimal down time, so there is a demand for these procedures. No one can take two or three weeks off from work to recover."

The "instant" face-lift consists of four stages, Walden explained: the insertion of the barbed thread, then the deployment of the suture material, followed by the anchoring of the soft tissues and then the fixation into place.

There's one superlong, supersneaky suture. And yes, the needle is big.

Angelica Kavouni, 47, told the Daily Mail that she was unhappy with her "increasingly jowly" appearance. She decided to give the "one-stitch face-lift" -- also called a thread lift or an iGuide -- a try with plastic surgeon.

Hardy experienced minimal side-effects from the 40-minute procedure and said that with makeup, she could return to work that day.

So can one stitch hold up, or hold back all those years?

Not exactly, according to Angelo Cuzalina, president-elect of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

The face, he notes, "has a lot of ligaments and tissues that tend to pull back down, so it’s not like a single suture could ever hold up a face or a portion of the face."

But the technique is getting better and better all the time, Walden says. "Our methods are getting better so they will last longer."

In the meantime, Hardy told the Mail that if she didn’t like her "new" face, the surgeon had said that the face-lift was reversible. Basically, it was a matter of pulling out the suture.

Vampire Facelift

Yes, you read that right! Vampires are incredibly hot right now, and everyone wants a piece of the popularity it seems. ABC News is reporting there is a new product on the market called Selphyl that actually extracts the blood from your own body and is injected into wrinkles on the face and body. This product is being marketed in the same category as soft dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane. They claim that the results are comparable to fillers and can last up to 15 months. In addition to great results the price range is in the ballpark of $1,100 to $1,500 per injection.

At first I wasn't too sure if I understood what this product was....I mean they are just taking blood and injecting it into wrinkled skin....um, isn't that just going to look like a bruise? Obviously, the science surrounding this new product is a little more complex than that. Selphyl is prepared by drawing a patient's blood, separating the platelets from the red blood cells, blending the platelets with a fibrin mixture and injecting it to the area a patient wants to augment. It takes a few weeks to see the final results, so injectors are being told to overfill the area by 20% so the patient will have an idea what the final results will look like....the result "in the chair" will be a little larger than the end result. The mass appeal will be injecting a "natural" substance already found in the body.

Of course with any new product there are some concerns. Because you are extracting your own blood to create a small amount of product, this is not a good option for someone who needs to volumize areas over a full face....there simply isn't enough product generated. Also, blood can cause an "itchy" after after-effect and can also cause burning or discoloration to the skin. Selphyl is FDA-approved.

Although, we do not carry this product here in our office we do have a full menu of injectable options!! Give us a call and we can set you up for a consultation with Alix, PA-C. 212-288-9009.

LXNY Segment Boobs vs. No Boobs

LXNY produced a GREAT segment yesterday about the dilemma to get breast augmentation or not. This is always such a hot topic no matter what is going on in the media. As it would have it people like Kate Hudson and Heidi Montag gave these ladies PLENTY to discuss. In addition to experts from magazines like In Touch, was our own Teneia Wooten. Ms. Wooten is a recent patient of Dr. Walden who underwent breast augmentation. Teneia is such a excellent example of the kind of women that make up the majority of patients that undergo breast augmentation. I think with Hollywood stars like Heidi Montag and Pamela Anderson splashed all over the tabloids, we as a society associate breast augmentation with those type of results. To be honest woman like Teneia who have a natural and beautiful result are more the norm.

Many issues are discussed such as breast size, body dysmorphic disorder, and other self confidence issues. We all thought Teneia's answers were spot on! She also brings up a good point that breast augmentation is a big decision and a major surgery. It is incredibly important to always do your research and make sure you go to a board certified plastic surgeon when thinking of going under the knife. Especially when these days we have easy access the Internet which can be such a great research tool!

See below for the entire segment on LXNY! Enjoy!!

Smoking and its Harmful Effects on Plastic Surgery

Our own Dr. Jennifer Walden was recently featured on Fox News to discuss the risks of smoking. We all know smoking is detrimental to our health, but what Dr. Walden didn’t have a chance to mention was how harmful smoking can be for surgical patients. The challenges of permanently kicking a nicotine habit are discussed in the clip above, and many patients struggle to quit temporarily in the pre- and post-op period.

With respect to wound healing after surgery, smokers already have some degree of permanent constriction of blood vessels, which is known as "vasoconstriction." So these patients are already at a disadvantage as compared to non-smokers when heading into surgery, such as increased pulmonary and heart risks associated with sedation and general anesthesia, as well as decreased blood supply to the skin and deeper tissues needed desperately for nice incisions to heal with the best scars possible. Smoking during the recommended four week abstention period surrounding surgery can leave patients vulnerable to complications, such as:

    • Poor and/or delayed wound healing
    • Increased risk of infection
    • Longer bruising period
    • Skin loss
    • Hypertrophic or keloid scarring
    • Increased risk of pulmonary problems
    • Flap necrosis (as with “flap” procedures) or tissue breakdown

Quitting two weeks prior helps to rid the majority of nicotine from the body, while the remaining traces are flushed out during the initial period following surgery. However two weeks is no magic number for quitting and the longer the period of abstinence before, the better, most experts agree.

Rod J. Rohrich, MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center explains, "Tobacco smoke contains more than 3,800 identified substances, of which nicotine and carbon monoxide are two of the most detrimental to wound healing and may cause pulmonary complications. This impaired wound healing may dramatically decrease the final cosmetic outcome."

Considering people generally invest in plastic surgery to improve their appearance and self-confidence, it may be the perfect time to use one's surgery date as a goal and quit smoking altogether!

Plastic Jungle

Lindsay Price stars as the free-spirited fashion designer "Victory Ford" in NBC's enticing new drama series "Lipstick Jungle," based on the best-selling book by Candace Bushnell. Victory was once the most celebrated up-and-coming fashion designer in the business, until the New York Times trashed her new fall collection. She must now pick up the pieces of her shattered life and rebuild her career, as she relies on her friends and the new man in her life to help her get back on her Jimmy Choo's (Source: NBC.com)
Lindsay can now join the ranks of other speculated starlets who have gone under the knife. Although she is of both Asian and European descent, it seems like she has become more Westernized over the years. Our very own Dr. Walden is quoted as saying "... based upon the one early photo provided, it seems she may have undergone double eyelid surgery, a procedure to give more of an upper lid sulcus and contour similar to Caucasian eyes. Her jaw has a squarer angle when I compare the pictures I have, which may be due to angle of the camera, but I suppose the possibility of mandibular and/ or chin augmentation with implant(s) exists. Her very straight and narrow nasal bridge with the contour and height that may be due to a nicely done rhinoplasty or a genetic blessing. It is not uncommon for patients of Eastern decent that request rhinoplasty that have a naturally low nasal dorsum, or bridge, to get an implant placed in this area to give the nose more height ” (Source: Makemeheal.com)

I am seeing her on the NY taxi TV also recently, and she is really a stunning woman.
