Is "UltraShape" the new face of "Lipo"?

It seems like everyday I am seeing information pop up about the newest form of Liposuction on the block, UltraShape. For those of you who haven't heard the buzz about this new procedure, here is the down low. UltraShape is the "brainchild" of Tel Aviv plastic surgeon Ami Glicksman. In this months issue (March 2009) of Allure magazine, they feature Dr. Glicksman in the article titled The Influencers. The surgeon confesses that this revolutionary procedure all started out as a daydream. He bagan to ponder "fat". He tells Allure, "What if there is an easier fat-removal method than liposuction. What if it was painless? That would be very nice." I think most of us would agree! This idea quickly turned into UltraShape. The procedure uses ultrasound that melts fat cells permanently and painlessly, without breaking the skin or requiring any anesthesia. Glicksman says, "The ultrasound shakes the fat cells to the point that they break down and are naturally metabolized by the liver." UltraShape can remove small amounts of fat, and works best on bulges in the stomach area, saddlebags, and knees. The hope is the device will get FDA approval by the end of this year. So, for now we will all have to dream about this "dream lipo" until it is available in the United States. Now what did our mothers tell us about patience??? Kim Kardashian:Completely Plastic?

Kim Kardashian was spotted in New York for Fashion Week. Many people noticed Kardashian looking quite different than before. It appears that she may have gone under the knife and received slight to medium cosmetic surgery-or has a make-up artist with special powers. Rumors are circulating that she has either gone under the knife or has had botox injections. Well, whatever Kardashian is doing I hope she doesn't go too overboard on cosmetic procedures as she is still quite young and has a pretty face, we wouldn't want her to look like she's made from wax.- I don't want to see her end up as one of Plastic Surgery's Worst Mistakes in the future.

Best Dressed:Fashion Week!

Whitney Port was amongst one of the best dressed women that has made an appearance at this year's Fashion Week. Whitney Port has appeared on The Hills and now has her own reality show called The City. We question of whether of not this 23-year old gem has had breast augmentation remains. As we know, if she has had implants, she would not be the first girl we've seen from The Hills to have gone under the knife (Spidey!). MakeMeHeal reported that Dr. John Di Saia said, “They look too small to be implanted.” And our very own Dr. Walden told MakeMeHeal, "“It doesn’t appear as though Whitney Port has had any sort of breast implant surgery as she appears to have a very natural look to her breasts with little upper pole fullness, and a bit of glandular ptosis, which just means they fall naturally.” It seems now as though there are only two girls from The Hills who have not gone under the knife to get breast augmentation: Whitney and Lauren. We look forward to seeing Whitney Port in her successful career in The City!

"Octo-Mom" or Angelina??

No, this is not ANOTHER blog about the mental health of Nadya Suleman.... or better known these days as "Octo-Mom". There are a number of strange things involving her current situation, but the one that really sticks out to me is the apparent plastic surgery the new mom has undergonen recently. As I am sure you are aware, the media reports that Ms. Suleman has been on many forms of government aid and assistance to help with the financial burden she is under. I understand the importance of making sure your children are properly provided for, but what I don't understand is where the money comes from to have plastic surgery when you already aren't able to provide monitarily for your family. Much of her family has come forth and said the mother of 14 has a fascination with Angelina Jolie-Pitt. Family members have said that Nadya loves everything about Jolie, from her looks to her quickly expanding brood. Many sites have claimed that "Octo-Mom" has had rhinoplasty, cheek implants, and many injectable fillers to her lips and forehead to emulate Jolie-Pitt. Suleman also went as far as demanding that her first interview be given only to Anne Curry, as did Angelina Jolie-Pitt has done after the birth of her children. Whatever the reason Ms. Suleman has chosen to move forward with these procedures, my thoughts and prayers will be for those 8 precious babies that are still in the hospital.

Peneolope Cruz Rumors

The 34-year old, Spanish actress Penelope Cruz has been rumored to have had lip fillers which may include Restylane or Collagen Injections. Luckily, Cruz does not look overdone. In addition to lip injections, Cruz may have also undergone some botox injections since she appears to have a very smooth forehead and beautiful looking skin which must also maintain on her own, without any kind of fillers. One surgeon reported to MakemeHeal, Dr. Paul S. Nassif, that “Some photos that show the front of Ms. Cruz’s nose are consistent with having had a rhinoplasty. Her tip cartilage looks like it might have a parenthesis look from the way the cartilage was excised.” Penelope has also said that she is not against plastic surgery but that, “My grandmothers had so many wrinkles, and every wrinkle told a story. I want to experience every year of my life for what it is. It doesn’t mean I am against somebody who does a little retouch or plastic surgery; that’s a different story. You can be 50 years old and want to do a little thing and it can look great. I don’t judge people who do it. I just don’t like how women complain about growing old. I loved Audrey Hepburn: she was so natural and she was a real woman. She was beautiful when she was young and she was beautiful when she was 60. Sophia Loren and Susan Sarandon, too.”

Grammy's Best Dressed and Best Augmentation?

American model Marisa Miller (30) graced the red carpet at the Grammy's with a short, cinched mini-dress. Marisa has appeared in Sports Illustrated and Victoria's Secret, and to say the least she has a body to die for! However, its been rumored that she has had a breast augmentation, breast lift and possible rhinoplasty (Source: Plasticopedia and Awful Plastic Surgery). The picture on the right shows Marissa laying down and what seems like the outline of implants. The picture on the left looks like she may have slight drooping and recent pictures of Marissa with a loose shirt taken at the same angle show her breasts as more perky and voluminous.

New lips for Nikki?

Nikki Cox, one of the many stars to hit the red carpet at the 2009 Grammy Awards last night, was looking...err...a little swollen. This look is most likely the result of overdone fillers in the lips and cheeks. The stunning red-head has become nearly unrecognizable as the natural contours of her face have been lost as a result of too many injectables. Despite reports in the spring of 2008 citing the former Las Vegas star had overdone it, Nikki seems to be pleased with her results. Since fillers last from about 3-6 months depending on the product and injection site, she would have needed additional injections to maintain her full lips. Another possibility? Nikki may have had her cheeks injected with excess fat from her tummy, creating her puffy appearance. In either case, at least hubby actor Jay Mohr doesn't seem to mind the change.

Usher's Wife Tameka Foster: Plastic Surgery Complication of Medical Tourism?

Sad story: Access Hollywood has reported that pop music singer Usher has cancelled his pre-Grammy party where he was scheduled to perform because of a serious medical issue involving his wife, Tameka Foster. Foster reportedly underwent elective plastic surgery in Brazil, and has had complications from that. Few know the details of this case yet as it is breaking, but apparently a neurosurgeon from the US is traveling to Brazil to help. This is not a good sign, as it could mean that it may be a serious complication involving the central nervous system (brain or spinal cord), but again, nothing is known of the specifics of this particular situation.


Whatever the unfortunate situation, thoughts and prayers are with the patient and her family in a difficult time.


From a general standpoint, in the past the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has warned of the risks of "medical tourism", which is a odd set of words used to define when a patient from one country such as the United States travels to another country to undergo an elective procedure. Why would anyone choose to do that when the best doctors, nurses, and hospitals, and most advanced and standardized medical care in the world is available in America? I don't have the answer to that, but traveling overseas is usually done for the perceived "benefit" of a discounted price, a theoretical difference in the technique of surgery performance, and the anonymity involved with recovery in a different locale. All of these purported benefits can quickly be wiped out if a complication occurs and the patient is not in their home country.


Different standards of quality control and training of surgeons and staff can also be found overseas. In the case of Usher's wife, one wonders what procedure she may have undergone, as she just had a baby in December and in the vast majority of instances it would be considered too soon to operate on someone from a body contouring standpoint just 1 to 2 months after childbearing (Brazil is known for its cosmetic body contouring and breast surgery). The body is till in hormonal and physiologic flux after pregnancy, mom may still be breast-feeding, and the weight gained during pregnancy is still coming off.


The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has listed the following guidelines for medical tourism on its website which are critical:


The key guidelines for plastic surgery travelers:
-What is the surgeon's training?
A gynecologist performing a breast augmentation or a dermatologist doing a face lift are not appropriate choices.

-Is the plastic surgeon certified?
The ISAPS website lists the names and addresses of over 1,600 certified plastic surgeons in 84 countries.

-Is the plastic surgeon certified?
Ask for certification information and who the certifying body is.

-Does your personal health insurance cover you outside your country?
Most health insurance providers do not cover individuals for surgery performed outside their own country. Consider obtaining International Medical Coverage that may be available through your insurance agent.

-What about aftercare?
Patients should stay in the area where the surgery was performed for at least one week, depending on the procedure. Find out in advance where you will stay and if this facility is prepared to care for your post operative needs.

-What about complications?
-What doctor will care for you at home if you have complications and who will pay for secondary or revision procedures?

-Do the key personnel at the surgeon's office speak your language fluently?
If you cannot be easily understood, be prepared for complications.

-With whom are you communicating?
You should be talking directly with the doctor's staff and the doctor. A travel agent should only make travel and accommodations arrangements.

-Is the surgeon a member of recognized national and international societies?
ISAPS membership is by invitation and is granted to applicants only after extensive screening.

-Have you checked for references?
Ask for names and contact information of patients who have recently had a similar procedure and contact them about their experience with the surgeon, their staff, aftercare facilities and post-operative follow up.
